The tapestry was hand woven by master weaver Raymond Picaud of Aubusson, France, who also wove tapestries for the walls of Salvador Dali's castle, among others. Aubusson is well known for its tapestry and carpets, which have been famous throughout the world since the 14th century. The Aubusson and Felletin workshops were given "Royal Appointment" status in the 17th century, assuring that this piece is of the highest investment qualtity. This special piece was created in an edition of only six pieces, and this is the first in the edition. The tag is still present on the back of the piece, and has been hand signed by Edouard Dermit, whom Jean Cocteau adopted and was his sole heir. All his life, Jean Cocteau was inspired by Greek sculptures and especially profiles. This piece is iconic of his work. In a very minimal way, the idea of ancient Greek architecture, the Mediterranean sea, the sun and life with this profile are present. The strength of the colors is absolutely stunning and give a very vivid feeling to the piece. This piece is truly a token of Cocteau's rich colorful palette and facinating artistry through which he carried out his ideas in decorative art. Jean Cocteau was a renowned French writer, designer, playwright, artist and filmmaker, best known for his novel "Les Enfants Terribles" and his films "The Blood of a Poet", "Les Parents Terribles", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Orpheus". He was also a very talented drawer and painter. His circle of associates, friends and lovers included Kenneth Anger, Pablo Picasso, Jean Marais, Coco Chanel, Igor Stravinsky, among many others. Cocteau was an important exponent of avant-garde art, and had great influence on the work of others.
