Est. $9,500-$10,000 Giorgio de Chirico (Italian; 1888-1978) "Hebdomeros in Barca Nella Sua Camera" Original Colored Lithograph Hand Signed & Marked "E.A." (Artist Proof) in Exhibit Quality Frame From the Collection of Pierre Argillet W/COA - This spectacular piece is an original colored lithograph by world renowned Italian artist, Giorgio de Chirico. The piece was executed in 1970 in the later period of the master’s life, and is an original elaboration of earlier themes, created in collage style from various elements of his metaphysical alphabet. De Chirico placed Ulysses, oars in hands, in a rowboat navigating on a carpet-sea inside a reassuring bourgeois setting. The room seems like a small museum arranged by the artist at the end of his career in his own memory, the chair and armchair as found in the Furniture in the Valley series of the 1920s, and the room that brings to mind paintings from the 1920s. The door left ajar at the back of the room reminds us of a dimension and place beyond our contingent being of and in the world. The piece is hand signed and titled in pencil, and is also marked "E.A." (Epreuve d'artiste, Artist Proof). The lithograph is in excellent condition, and is framed in a beautiful, wood and gilt gold exhibit quality frame. The piece (including the frame) measures approx. 33"L x 28.5"W, and the piece itself measures approx. 20"L x 16"W. This piece comes from the collection of Pierre Argillet, publisher, avid collector of Surrealist art, and lifetime friend of Salvador Dali and the Surrealists. This is the first time this collection has been offered at auction, and the piece will come with a certificate of authenticity from the Museum of Surrealism in Melun, France (Pierre Argillet's former home "Chateau Vaux-le-Penil" and former museum). Giorgio de Chirico was an Italian artist and writer, who founded the scuola metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists. Surrealists who acknowledged De Chirico's influence include Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, and Rene Magritte, and other artists as diverse as Giorgio Morandi, Carlo Carra, Paul Delvaux, Carel Willink, Harue Koga and Philip Guston have also acknowledged his influence. His works have been exhibited in the J. Paul Getty Museum in California, Museum of Modern Art in New York, The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and many others.
