Leonor Fini was an Argentine surrealist painter, designer, illustrator, and author, known for her depictions of powerful women. She grew up in Trieste, Italy, before moving to Milan at the age of 17, and then to Paris later on. In Paris she became acquainted with Carlo Carra and Giorgio de Chirico, who inspired much of her work. She also came to know Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, Georges Bataille, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Picasso, Andre Pieyre de Mandiargues, and Salvador Dali. The originality of her art as well as her intelligence, famous wit and charisma accorded her celebrity status in the Paris art world and beyond beginning in the late thirties. She also had a unique talent for film design and created costumes for Fellini's "8 ½" as well as for Renato Castellani's "Romeo and Juliet" and John Huston’s "A Walk with Love and Death". Her work is in countless public collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, Musee d Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum in Japan, and many others. Fini is considered one of the most important women artists of the 20th century.
