The piece is titled "Echan Perros al Toro", or "Dogs Are Sicced on the Bull", and was a part of the "La Tauromaquia" series. La Tauromaquia (Bullfighting) was a series of 33 prints created by Goya, which was published in 1816. The works of the series depict bullfighting scenes, and this is the 25th plate in the series. The piece is in stunning condition for its age, and has been professionally matted and framed. This is truly a museum quality investment piece, as Goya is considered the most important Spanish artist of late 18th and early 19th centuries. The piece (including the frame) measures approx. 21" x 17.5". Francisco Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker, who throughout his long career was a commentator and chronicler of his era. He was immensely successful in his lifetime, and is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. He became established as a portrait painter to the Spanish aristocracy, was elected to the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1780, named painter to the king in 1786, and made a court painter in 1789. Dissatisfied with political developments in Spain, Goya retired to Bordeaux in 1824 and spent his final years there and in Paris.
