Est. $3,200-$3,500 Frederick Hart (American; 1943-1999) "Pan Gargoyle, Maquette" Cast Marble Sculpture Signed, Dated 2004, & Numbered 87/195 W/COA - This stunning piece is a cast marble sculpture by world renowned American sculptor, Frederick Hart. The piece is titled "Pan Gargoyle, Maquette" and is one of only two editioned examples of Hart's work as an ornamental architectural sculptor, along with "Grotesque with Violin and Skull". The sculpture measures approx. 17" x 8" x 8", and is inscribed "F.E. Hart, #14; 2004 F. Hart and P.E.C.F." and numbered 87/195. This piece will also come with a certificate of authenticity. Frederick Hart has been called "America's greatest sculptor," and his legacy lives on forever with his "The Creation" sculptures on the west facade of Washington National Cathedral, and with his "Three Soldiers" sculpture at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, one of the most visited monuments in Washington, D.C. Hart is also represented in the U.S. Senate by the heroic marble statue of Senator Richard Russell in the Russell Senate Office Building, Senator Strom Thurmond in the Capital Building, and the marble bust of J. Danforth Quayle created for the Senate's Vice Presidential Bust Collection. In 1997, Hart created "The Cross of the Millennium", an acrylic sculpture presented to Pope John Paul II in honor of 50 years of priesthood. The Pope said of the piece, "This work represents a profound theological statement for our day." Hart's "Pan Gargoyle, Maquette" sculpture was recreated by well known sculptor Malcom Harlow, and occupies a prominent place on the northwest tower of Washington National Cathedral, above Hart's "Creation of Day" tympanum. Hart is considered a true maverick and one of the most highly regarded artists of this past century, and this is a rare opportunity to own a remarkable piece of his legacy.
