Est. $12,000-$13,500 Victorian Solid 18K Yellow Gold & Cobalt Blue Enamel Mourning Pendant W/Genuine Pearl & Diamond Accents on 16" Solid 10K Yellow Gold Victorian Chain - This lovely piece is a Victorian mourning pendant, made of solid 18k yellow gold. The pendant is embellished with a lovely cobalt blue enamel, and finished with genuine uncut diamond and pearl accents. The pendant has a domed center that raises off the piece approx. 0.5", and opens up to reveal an antique black and white photograph of a gentleman. The pendant is finished with ornate, incised filigree details and reeded edges, and truly embodies elegance and sophistication. The back of the piece has a clear window and a hinged, locket style opening, as these pieces were used to mourn the death of a loved one, and would usually contain a piece of their hair. This piece is extra special, as it still contains a lock of hair from the owner's loved one locked inside. Mourning jewelry has been around since the 1600s, and saw a massive rise in popularity in the 1800s. Before photography, this was a way for people to remember their loved ones after they had passed. This is one of the most magnificent memorial pieces we have ever seen come through our auction house. The pendant hangs on a Victorian, 16" solid 10k yellow gold franco chain. The pendant measures approx. 2" in diameter. (WEIGHT: pendant-34.3 grams, chain-10.8 grams)
