Est. $6,500-$7,500 1842-52 A. Bechtler Carolina Solid 21 Carat 27 Grain $1 Gold Coin in Capsule - The A. (Augustus) Bechtler gold dollar is perhaps the most widely collected coin from this southern private mint. It is quite rare because during the Civil War these coins were stolen off of the bodies of defeated soldiers. These coins were usually ruined, and to find one in this amazing condition is quite rare. The top edge is a bit damaged, and has been repaired. This is the "plain edge" version, making it more rare. The actual mintage of these coins is unknown, but we have never seen more than 8 ever surface in the last 25 years. This coin has AU details, other than the 1mm repair to the top of the rim, this coin is one of the finest Old American Gold pieces that we have ever seen. This is truly an investment quality piece, and it has been kept in a vault for over the last 75 years. This piece comes from one of the largest privately owned coin collections in the Northern United States. Similar coins that are graded sell for over $10,000.
